Eastport Schools

Early Eastport had several School Districts and several one or two room school houses. In 1891 a new school was built at a cost of $850 but was destroyed by fire on Feb.9, 1898. No photo's are available of that school. The photo above is the school that replaced it built in 1898 at a cost of $3,000. This building was sold at auction and a section of it is still in use as the American Legion Post, the first building West of the West Pond.

The Eastport School, built in 1912 at a cost of $10,000. It had four rooms on the main floor and four rooms on the second floor. On April 27, 1931 it burned down.

Theophilus A. Brouwer standing by the WWI Memorial he created in 1922. His son, Roger, also of Westhampton, was used as the model. The eight room school in the background was built in 1912 at a cost of about $10,000. On April 27, 1931 it burned down to the ground. In 1928 a new red brick school was being built with a covered walkway between the two buildings and was not damaged. Arthur Fechtman of Speonk told me a story recently that before the school was completely engulfed in flames, students were throwing books out the windows and the students outside were yelling, "throw them back in."
